  5. Ibo Eastern Region of Nigeria to secede under
  6. Lt-Col Odumegwu Ojukwu, an Oxford-educated
  7. Ibo. On the proclamation of Biafra, civil war
  8. ensued with the rest of the federation. In a
  9. bitterly fought campaign federal forces had
  10. confined the Biafrans to a shrinking area of
  11. the interior by 1968, and by 1970 Biafra
  12. ceased to exist.
